From Old Catalan malvatz (nominative form), influenced by the participle endings -at, -ada; from Lua error in Module:etymology at line 170: Old Occitan (pro) is not set as an ancestor of Catalan (ca) in Module:languages/data/2. The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca)., malvat, from Vulgar Latin *malifātius, which consists of Latin malus (bad) and fātum (destiny). Cognates include: Old French malvais, Italian malvagio.
