mantle-tree (plural mantle-trees)

  1. (archaic) A beam of wood over the opening of an open fireplace, from which items were hung.
    • 1600's. Robert Herrick (1591-1674), To Larr (poem):
      No more shall I from mantle-trees hang down
      To honour thee, my little parlsey crown.
