From Old Portuguese marfil, almafi, almafil, from Arabic عَظْم اَلْفِيل(ʿaẓm al-fīl, elephant-bone), from عَظْم(ʿaẓm, bone) + فِيل(fīl, elephant). Compare Galician, Spanish and Catalan marfil.
