Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese marỹeiro (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from mariño, from Latin marīnus. Compare Portuguese marinheiro, Spanish marinero, English mariner. Cf. also Vulgar Latin marinarius.
