From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch matroos (sailor, seaman), essentially from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] French matelot (seaman), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch mattenoot. Compare German Matrose, Swedish matros, Danish matros, and Crimean Tatar matros.
