[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *mannisk, from Proto-Germanic *manniskaz. Cognate with Old Frisian mennisk, Old Saxon mennisk, Old High German mennisc, Old Norse mennskr, Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌽𐌹𐍃𐌺𐍃 (mannisks). Equivalent to mann (“a human”) + -isċ (“-ish”).
