From Proto-Cushitic *mazkʷ-/*mizkʷ- (right side). A verb in Beja miyakw (to be dexterous) may be the original meaning. Cognate with Aweer midig, Rendille miig, Jiiddu meeg/mayg, Arbore midda, El Molo migit, Oromo mirgaa, Konso mikta, Afar migda, Yaaku maqayo, Beja mayikwa.
