Etymology

Earlier mocayre, from Middle French mocayart and Italian mocaiaro, both from Arabic مُخَيَّر (muḵayyar, choice), past participle of خَارَ (ḵāra, to choose). Form probably influenced by hair. Compare mockado, moire.
