From Spanish mosquito (“gnat”), diminutive of Spanish mosca (“fly”), from Latin musca (“fly”), from Proto-Indo-European *mūs- (“fly, stinging fly, gnat”). Cognate with West-Flemish meuzie (“mosquito”), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Swedish dialectal mausa (“mosquito”), Lithuanian musė (“a fly”). See also midge.
