From myö- (“rear, beyond”) +‎ -s (s-lative singular), from Proto-Finnic *möö-, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *müŋä (“rear, beyond”) (compare Erzya мей (mej, “reverse (side)”), мейле (mejle, “later”)). For a similar semantic development, see Hungarian meg (“and, plus”).
