From Proto-Italic *nogʷedos, from Proto-Indo-European *nogʷedós,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *nogʷós. Cognates include Ancient Greek γυμνός (gumnós, “naked”), Sanskrit नग्न (nagna), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬕𐬥𐬀 (maġna), Old Armenian մերկ (merk) and Old English nacod (whence English naked).
