From Proto-Slavic *ocelь, *ocělь from a north-Italian dialect,[1] ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin *aciāle, *aciārium, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin aciēs (edge, point), from ācer (sharp).[2]
