Backformed as a singular from translingual Octopoda, the order name, derived from New Latin octōpoda, plural of octōpūs (octopus), from Ancient Greek ὀκτώπους (oktṓpous), from ὀκτώ (oktṓ, eight) + πούς (poús, foot).
