Tocharian A[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tocharian *epäst + the adjective-forming suffix *-ye- (whence also Tocharian B epastye). *epäst is likely a compound of Proto-Indo-European *h₁opi- (upon, near) and *steh₂- (to stand). Also, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁opi-sth₂-i-, of the same meaning. Either way, cognates include Lithuanian apstus (plentiful), Sanskrit सुष्ठु (suṣṭhu, aptly, well).
