From Old Galician-Portuguese ordennar, from Vulgar Latin *ordiniāre, itself from Latin ōrdināre, present active infinitive of ōrdinō (or through a *ordinium), from ōrdō (“order, arrangement”), from Proto-Italic *ored(h)- (“to arrange”), of unknown origin. Compare Spanish ordeñar. Doublet of ordenar.
