Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اورون (orun, position; range; place) (till the 16th Century), from Proto-Turkic *orun (place). Perhaps revived from Ottoman Turkish instead of Arabic makam and mevki in Modern Turkish. Cognate with Kazakh орын (oryn).
