From Proto-Yoruba *ɔ̀-cʊ̀kpá, ultimately from Proto-Yoruboid *ó-cù (moon) +‎ *kpá, equivalent to o- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ ṣù (to be round) +‎ . pá could perhaps refer to the shining of the moon or the clearness of the moon when it is full. Compare with Yoruba oṣù
