      Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pьsati, *pisati; which is related to Sanskrit पिंशति (piṁśáti, to cut, carve, fashion, shape), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬯 (paēs-), Ancient Greek ποικίλος (poikílos), Gothic 𐍆𐌹𐌻𐌿𐍆𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍃 (filufaihs), Old High German fēh, Lithuanian piẽšti etc. – everything from Proto-Indo-European *peyk̑- (to paint, draw). First attested in the 15th century.[1] See also peha, pes and pestrý.
