palintrope (plural palintropes)

  1. (zoology) A part of the ventral valve of some brachiopods between the beak and the hinge line.
    • 2010, John P. Rafferty, The Paleozoic Era: Diversification of Plant and Animal Life, page 71:
Many hinged genera have a flat or curved shelf, called the palintrope, between the beak and the hinge line. The ventral palintrope is divided at the middle by the delthyrium, a triangular opening for the pedicle.
