Etymology

Reconstructed as pangku +‎ -an, from Javanese pangkon (ꦥꦁꦏꦺꦴꦤ꧀, “virama”, literally “lap”) and Balinese pangkon (literally “lap”), from Old Javanese paṅkwan, paṅkon (“lap”). Doublet of pangkuan.

Noun

pangkon (plural pangkon-pangkon)

1. (dialect, Java) virama: the diacritic used to suppress the inherent vowel that otherwise occurs with every consonant letter
2. (dialect, music, Bali) hollow wood, the upper part is used to place the metal blades of gamelan, saron, and so on, acting as a sound maker
