Feminine of parell, or from Vulgar Latin *paricla, feminine of *pariclus, from contraction of *pariculus, diminutive of Latin par. Compare Spanish pareja, Portuguese parelha, Galician parella, French pareille, Italian parecchia, Romanian pereche.
