From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Galician-Portuguese pedreiro, from pedra (rock) + -eiro (-eer), or less likely from a Vulgar Latin *petrārius, from Latin petra (rock), from Ancient Greek πέτρα (pétra, stone, rock). Compare Spanish pedrero, Asturian pedreru, Catalan pedrer, Occitan peirièr, Romanian pietrar.
