From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek πιμελή (pimelḗ, “fat”) for being a mineral with a greasy appearance, + -ite.

- The name pimelite was rejected in 2006 as a name as a result of confusion between it and nickel-dominant smectite or nickel-bearing talc.
