Serbo-Croatian[edit]

Adjective[edit]

pitke

  1. inflection of pitak:
    1. masculine accusative plural
    2. feminine genitive singular
    3. feminine nominative/accusative/vocative plural

Tocharian B[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Deadjectival from *pih₁d-s-ko-, a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *peyH- (fat), with a dental extension that also appears in Proto-Germanic *faitaz (fat).[1]

Noun[edit]

pitke m

  1. fat
  2. oil

Usage notes[edit]

For a long time, this term has been interpreted as referring to spittle, spit, or saliva. This has been challenged by Pan (2019)'s examination of Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese texts parallel to passages where pitke appears. Pan proposes that it instead refers to fat and oil.
