  1. (zoology) Any fish of the family Plecoglossidae (sometimes regarded as a subfamily, Plecoglossinae in Osmeridae); the ayu or sweetfish.

Usage notes[edit]

A single genus and species is recognised. Some authories recognise three subspecies of Plecoglossus altivelis, but this division is disputed.
