English[edit]

Noun[edit]

polite notice

  1. (UK) A heading commonly placed on certain notices, such as "no parking" notices, originally intended to be misread at a glance as "police notice", thus imparting a spurious authority, and often using similar typography to genuine police notices; may now be meant or read literally by those unaware of the original purpose.
