Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Likely originating as a lengthening of potver, a minced oath derived from godver; alternatively analogically formed from godverdorie, but potverdorie has been attested somewhat earlier, although this could be due to godverdorie being more taboo.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˌpɔt.fərˈdoː.ri/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: pot‧ver‧do‧rie

Interjection[edit]

potverdorie

  1. dang, darned [from 1890s]
