Etymology

From apretar (squeeze, constrict, compress). The semantic evolution to "dark" comes through the sense of "dense" or "thick" [1]. Another common, but less likely, etymology suggested is Vulgar Latin *prettus, from Latin pressus. Compare Portuguese preto, Asturian prietu.

Adjective

prieto (feminine prieta, masculine plural prietos, feminine plural prietas)

  1. dark, swarthy. Used to describe both people and landscapes.
  2. (Louisiana) black.
