Spanish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From apretar (squeeze, constrict, compress). The semantic evolution to "dark" comes through the sense of "dense" or "thick" [1]. Another common, but less likely, etymology suggested is a Vulgar Latin *prettus, from pressus. Compare Portuguese preto, Asturian prietu.

Adjective[edit]

prieto (feminine singular prieta, masculine plural prietos, feminine plural prietas)

  1. dark, swarthy. Used to describe both people and landscapes.
