Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Low German pudel.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Further root of the word "pudel"? Is it related to the "poodle" or "splash about" sense for German pudeln? If so, how? Seems overall obscure and perhaps "unknown origin" or sound-symbolic, though "pudeln" has a "botch, miss a strike" sense also reflected in the Polish, if this sense is related to the "box" sense somehow.”
