Etymology

From Latin pygargus from Ancient Greek πύγαργος (púgargos), a compound of Ancient Greek πῡγή (pūgḗ, rump) + ἀργός (argós, white).

  1. (biblical) An unidentified large animal with horns, possibly the addax, mentioned in the Bible (Deuteronomy 14:5) as one of the animals permitted for food.
