Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unclear; from Proto-Albanian *kertsula,[1] possibly borrowed from Latin cercellus, circellus (small ring, hoop),[2] ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek κίρκος (kírkos, ring). Doublet of qark, qarkull. Alternatively inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ker-ḱ-[1] or *kert- (to turn, to bind),[3] or simply qerth +‎ -ull.
