Latvian

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *rey-, *rī- (to scrape; to pluck; to cut) (with an extra k); cf. dialectal riekt (to cut (bread); to plow (for the first time)). Apparently, the original meaning of rīks was “sharp instrument,” perhaps “knife.” Cognates include Lithuanian rỹkas (instrument; container).[1]
