From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruŋh ~ *ruuŋ() ~ *rəŋ() (hole, hollow); cognate with Khmer រូង (ruung, hole, cave), Old Mon sruṅ (modern Mon သြိုၚ် (sang, hole, hollow).
