Etymology
Rausch (“intoxication”) + -ig.
In the 1830s, Gregor Dankovszky compared the term to Hungarian részeg (“drunk”),[1] but the similarity must be coincidental, because Gábor Zaicz takes részeg to be of Ugric or Uralic origin.[2]
