Etymology
Alteration of relâmpado, from re- + lâmpado, from Latin lampada (“lamp”), from lampas, lampades, or through a derivative of Late Latin lampō, lampāre. The prefix re- indicates the idea of repetition, hence lightning striking over and over again. Compare Spanish relámpago.
