Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English rethnes, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English rēþnes (fierceness, rage, cruelty, severity, zeal, savageness, ferocity, harshness, storminess), equivalent to rethe +‎ -ness. Cognate with Scots rethnas (retheness).
