[edit]Inherited from Old French ribaud (“scoundrel”) + -er, from riber (“to be licentious”), from Frankish *rīban (“to copulate, be in heat”, literally “to rub”), from Proto-Germanic *wrībaną (“to turn, twist, writhe”).
