From Latin rotundus, probably reformed from the older form ritondo, itself from a Vulgar Latin variant retundus (compare Spanish and Portuguese redondo, Old French reont (modern French rond), Occitan redond, ardon, Catalan rodó, redó, Romanian rotund, rătund).
