From Proto-Vietic *m-rəɲʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(d)mrəɲʔ (body louse). Cognate with Arem ⁿrìɲˀ, Pacoh ntréinh, Khmu [Cuang] tmbriɲ ("gnat"), Khasi jynreiñ.
