French

Etymology

Borrowed from Latin saevīre.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /se.viʁ/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

sévir

  1. (intransitive) to crack down, clamp down
  2. (intransitive, of war, storm, etc.) to rage
  3. (intransitive, of disease, poverty, etc.) to be rife
  4. (intransitive, of policy, belief, etc.) to hold sway

Conjugation

This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
