Etymology[edit]

Regional variant of schaper. Likely from an eastern dialect with umlaut on long vowels, such as Middle Low German schêper. Compare Low German Schaiper, German Schäfer. Alternatively directly from scheep, dialectal variant of schaap (apparently with spontaneous fronting).
