setl
Central Huasteca Nahuatl
Pronunciation
Noun
setl
- ice.
Old English
Etymology
From a merger of two nouns of similar meaning, which came to be pronounced the same in West Saxon because of a sound change whereby -þl and -þm became -tl and -tm in some words (cf. botl, botm):
- West Germanic *seþl, whence also Old Frisian sedel, Old Saxon sethal and Old High German sedal
- West Germanic *setl < Proto-Germanic *setlaz, whence also Old High German sezzal and Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐍄𐌻𐍃 (sitls).
