Albanian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
- Compound of sh- (“de-, dis-, un-”) + dredh (“turn, revolve, twist”).
- Prefix sh- (“de-, dis-, un-”) from the same root as ith (“behind”), namely Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰs.[1]
- dredh from Proto-Albanian *drē̆δ-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰreǵʰ-. Cognate to Old Armenian դառնամ (daṙnam, “to turn, revolve”),[2] Gothic dragan (“to draw, accumulate, take on”), English drag. Related to dridh (“tremble, quake rock, move”), from Proto-Albanian *dreδ-, from Proto-Indo-European *d(h)r- (“to tremble, quake, rock”). Cognate to Lithuanian drebù (“to tremble, quake”).[3]
- A variant of shtreze, from shtroj,[4] related to shtrij.
- According to Orel, from shtrat.[5]
