[edit]Borrowed from Latin synōnymum, from Ancient Greek συνώνυμον (sunṓnumon), neuter singular form of συνώνυμος (sunṓnumos), from σῠν- (sŭn-, “with”) + ὄνῠμᾰ (ónŭmă, “name”) + -ος (-os).
