Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From sisar ‎(sister) +‎ -us

Noun[edit]

sisarus

  1. sibling (person who shares same parents)
    Kaikki sisarukset ovat tänään paikalla.
All the siblings are present today.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Normally used in plural. Of only one sibling the gender-specific terms e.g. sisko ‎(sister), sisar ‎(sister) or veli ‎(brother) are used. The uninflected singular form is used as modifier in compound nouns.
  • Despite its derivation, not to be confused with siskokset ‎(group of sisters).
