[edit]From Old Swedish siæl, sial, borrowed from Old Saxon sēola, from Proto-Germanic *saiwalō (“soul”). Cognate with Danish sjæl, Norwegian sjel, Icelandic sál, English soul, Dutch ziel, German Seele, Low German Seel, Luxembourgish Séil (“soul, spirit”).
