From Proto-Germanic *smerwą, from Proto-Indo-European *smérus. Cognate with Old English smeoru, Old Norse smjǫr, Gothic 𐍃𐌼𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌸𐍂 (smairþr), also Old Irish smiur (marrow), Tocharian B ṣmare.
