soap +‎ berry: the fleshy part of the fruit was used in washing linen.

Noun

soapberry (plural soapberries)

  1. Any woody plant of the genus Sapindus, which is eponymous of the Sapindaceae family
    Most soapberries are tropical.
  2. The fruit of such a plant, especially of the tree Lua error in Module:taxlink at line 68: Parameter "noshow" is not used by this template..
    Soapberries are rich enough in saponin to be used as soap substitute, hence their name.
