Etymology[edit]

Compound of spel +‎ computer.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈspɛl.kɔmˌpju.tər/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: spel‧com‧pu‧ter

Noun[edit]

spelcomputer m (plural spelcomputers, diminutive spelcomputertje n)

  1. A video game console, especially a non-portable one. [from 1979]
    Synonym: console

Usage notes[edit]

  • Now mostly used by non-gamers. Avid gamers and former gamers strongly tend to use the synonym console instead and may find spelcomputer old-fashioned or noobish. This distinction in term usage seems to date to the mid/late nineties or early aughties.
  • Typically used for non-portable video game consoles, but may also be applied to handhelds, particularly in more generalist usage.
